Lunesta
Lunesta is one of the more popular prescription sleep aids on the market. Lunesta promises to help you “get back to sleeping the way you want to.” Does Lunesta work? Lunesta is a fairly effective sleeping pill but is loaded with side effects and is very expensive. Let’s take a closer look at Lunesta.
Prescription Sleeping Pills
Lunesta is a prescription sleeping pill. Prescription sleeping pills have both pros and cons. The biggest pro of a prescription sleeping pill is that it is FDA approved. What does this mean? In order to get the FDA’s approval, a product is subjected to clinical studies to evaluate effectiveness and safety.
Common Myth about Prescription Sleeping Pills #1-All prescription sleeping pills are effective. Just because a product is FDA approved does not mean that it works, as evidenced by the many mediocre prescription pills on the market.
Common Myth about Prescription Sleeping Pills #2. All prescription sleeping pills are safe. The FDA approval doesn’t entail that a product is free from side effects. To the contrary, most prescription sleeping pills have side effects much worse than pills that can be purchased online or over the counter.
One of the biggest cons of prescription sleeping pills is the cost. To get FDA approved costs a ton of money. Because of this prescription sleeping pills tend to be very expensive. They also require a doctor’s signature (i.e. a doctor’s appointment). Anyone who has ever been to the doctor knows that those appointments are not cheap.
What’s in Lunesta?
The active ingredient in Lunesta is eszopiclone. Eszopiclone has been shown to be an effective short term treatment for insomnia. It works with the benzodiazepine receptor-GABA complex to sedate the body and help you get to sleep.
Is Lunesta for everybody?
Lunesta is not for everybody. Do not take Lunesta if you:
- have a history of depression
- are pregnant or may become pregnant
- have a history of drug or alcohol abuse
- have liver disease
- have a history of mental illness or suicidal thoughts
Lunesta Side Effects
The following are common side effects associated with Lunesta:
- unpleasant taste in mouth
- morning drowsiness
- dry mouth
- dizziness
- symptoms of the common cold
- you may feel drowsy the day after taking Lunesta
- severe allergic reactions
- memory loss
- increased anxiety
- abnormal thoughts and behavior
- getting out of bed when you are not fully awake and doing an activity that you do not you are doing.
As you can see the number of side effects is quite lengthy. Yikes!
How much is Lunesta?
Expensive. How expensive? Lunesta costs over $100 per month. This is not including having to pay for the doctor’s visit to get the prescription.
Is Lunesta worth purchasing?
Lunesta is an effective sleeping aid but is riddled with side effects and is extremely expensive. The bottom line is that there are sleeping solutions out there that are justs as good without the side effects AND are much cheaper.
